Eddie Izzard has announced he is aiming to stand as the Labour candidate in Brighton at the next general election.
The 61-year-old said: ‘Labour needs a candidate that can inspire many thousands to become our friends and allies in the fight for a fairer-greener-cleaner planet’.
Izzard, originally from nearby Bexhill-on-sea, said of Brighton: ‘Support this brilliant city and its diverse and vibrant community’.
‘Reaching out and lifting people up is at the heart of my politics. I believe in making connections – not breaking connections’.
The comedian is up against Green Party co-leader Sian Berry as they attempt to retain their only parliamentary seat, which they won in 2019 with a respectable 19,000 majority.
The Green Party in Brighton is a shining example of a political party doing the work in the local communities, getting results and getting elected on the back of that work.
Izzard is, in many ways, the perfect Labour Party candidate.
Wealthy, middle-class, woke, LGBTQ+ think they know what’s best for the working class, with the only interaction they do with the workers is some staged visit to a school or NHS Trust where they interact with teachers and nurses believing them to be the low end of the workforce when we all know there’s an army of people working in infrastructure, retail, distribution earning way less than the professional class Izzard and co support.
Labour, woke or not, is the professional and middle-class party and has been for 25 years.
