This time in connection to an allegation of rape.
Crispin Blunt said in a statement, ‘It has been reported that an MP was arrested yesterday in connection with an allegation of rape. I am confirming that MP was me.’
‘The fact of the arrest requires a formal notification of the Speaker and then my Chief Whip.’
‘I have been interviewed twice in connection with this incident, the first time three weeks ago when I initially reported my concern over extortion.’
‘The second time was earlier this morning under caution following arrest. The arrest was unnecessary as I remain ready to cooperate fully with the investigation that I am confident will end without charge.’
‘I do not intend to say anything further on this matter until the police have completed their inquiries.’
Blunt has had the Tory whip suspended in another blow for the Tories and their electoral chances.
It is important to note that no charges have been brought against Blunt and that the police are continuing their investigation. Blunt said that he expected to be cleared and that he had previously reported an attempt of extortion to the police.
Blunt has been described as ‘a long-term critic of Israel’. He is a co-director of the International Centre of Justice for Palestinians. In October 2023, he announced the group’s intention to prosecute UK government leaders for “aiding and abetting war crimes in Gaza” amid the 2023 Israel–Hamas war, warning his colleagues in Westminster of the peril of guilt through complicity. He voted against the Cameron–Clegg coalition government in 2013 on the issue of British military intervention in the Syrian civil war.
If the allegations are proven to be false, many would question the convenient timing of such claims, given the situation in Gaza. Many would benefit from a prominent critic of the conduct of the Israeli government being criminally charged for a heinous crime.
We at the Homeland Party pride ourselves on keeping a very close eye on the political class and their behaviour, such as the conduct of former MP Chris Pincher. These people try to take the moral high ground and condemn our party and members for trivial matters whilst committing some atrocious crimes themselves. However, we recognise that everyone is innocent until proven guilty and that malicious forces will fabricate crimes to silence politicians who step out of line.
We will never go as far as tarring the whole of the conservative party for the actions of one of its MPs, a courtesy which is never extended to us.
