A former physics teacher whose sexually explicit OnlyFans profile was seen by school pupils has been struck off.
Kirsty Buchan, from Coatbridge, posted pictures of herself using the pseudonym Jessica Jackrabbit, and described herself as a “good teacher gone bad” with a “sexy tight body”.
She advertised the paid-for page using Instagram, which pupils could see, after being cautioned by her head teacher about her “poor judgement” on social media use.
The General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) found that Ms Buchan had failed to conceal her identity and profession, and that her behaviour lacked integrity.
Gary Burton, speaking on behalf of the GTC said Buchan “used her profession as a selling tool” and that her former school is now tarnished with having an OnlyFans teacher.
Ms Buchan declined to appear at the hearing whilst claiming there was no point as they (the GTCS) had already made up their minds.
Buchan told BBC news “I didn’t want to leave my job, but I also had to make more money. I even had other jobs before going down the OnlyFans road – I worked in Tesco; I worked as an elf at a Braehead Christmas event. I was always a hard worker.
“My images were illegally downloaded and shared with pupils in the school that I worked in – the career that I worked my whole life to get. So, I had no choice but to leave.”
The school’s head teacher Seonaidh Black told the hearing she had on a “couple of occasions”, Ms Black said Ms Buchan was not clear on boundaries with pupils – clarifying that she was not referring to any inappropriate relationships, but that Ms Buchan’s social media accounts were “open where pupils could access them”.
The head teacher said she addressed these issues with Ms Buchan through informal conversations. “I wanted to make sure it was nipped in the bud,” she said.
Mr Burton said there had been “significant blurring between her private and her professional life”, that she had shown “zero insight into her conduct” and that she had failed to act as a role model.
Having carried out its own investigation into the matter, Glasgow City Council said: “The council has a code of conduct that all employees should adhere to and a teacher who has actively pursued a second income on this type of website brings their school, the council and their profession into disrepute.”
Blurred Lines
There is a lot to unpack here.
Firstly, we have a teacher who, for you and me, common sense would suggest she shouldn’t be selling herself on OnlyFans. The total lack of self-awareness this woman possesses is astounding. She claims to have needed to earn more money. Why not sign up with a tutoring agency? Considering her supposed passion for teaching, a job she’d worked her whole life to get. Instead, this woman resorted to the easiest option: prostitution.
We then have the head teacher who knew what Buchan was up to but decided that an informal chat was appropriate.
Interestingly we have the council who have condemned Buchan’s actions sighting breach of code of conduct.
Cultural Direction
Ms Buchan should rightly be struck off as a teacher. However, with the extremely progressive way our education system works, we can understand why she thought it would be ok to do OnlyFans. She works in an environment that encourages children to be open about sex and gender. An environment that will happily support pride month, kids wishing to transition, and in a lot of cases facilitate drag queens reading to nursery children. So, an OnlyFans prostitute/high school teacher is OK, isn’t it?
It rightly turns out not to be okay.
Buchan’s error of judgement was glaring. Unfortunately, we are living in a society where the greater good is a ridiculous notion and selfishness is king. She saw an easy route to make a quick buck and took it, with the only downside being an awkward chat with the head teacher.
As for the head teacher, like so many in her position, she was probably very supportive of her colleague, initially at least. But like most good managerial types, she threw her colleague under the bus upon realising the writing was on the wall.
Those cut from that cloth, only do the correct thing once the game is up.
