Mr Camus Banned from UK: A Shameful Blow to Free Speech

— a concept that sits at the heart of our political cause. But when a person who wishes to peacefully discuss such a concept is banned outright by the government, we must ask ourselves: who are the real extremists?

This week, the Home Office banned Mr Renaud Camus from entering the United Kingdom. Mr Camus, a respected French author and philosopher from a neighbouring and friendly nation, has been denied entry not because he poses a threat, but because his ideas do. Not violent ones—in fact, he has always been outspoken against violence in all its forms—but ideas that challenge liberal orthodoxy and ask uncomfortable questions about the direction of Western societies.

Mr Camus was due to speak at our conference on the topic of remigration—a peaceful, humane and increasingly relevant idea that deserves open political debate. In line with the law, Mr Camus applied for and was granted an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) to enter the UK. Days later, this authorisation was withdrawn. The reason given by the Home Office? That his presence is “not conducive to the public good”—a vague, unaccountable phrase increasingly used to silence dissent. The email states that he has no right of appeal but could apply for a visa, which at such short notice would cost around a thousand pounds—and we are told by inside sources it would likely be refused with the same vague justification. So we won’t be wasting the money.

To say this is about the “public good” is laughable when, on Tuesday this week, over 700 migrants illegally crossed the Channel by small boat and will be waved through every process and given all sorts of resources at taxpayers’ expense1. At the same time, our courts routinely rule against deporting convicted murderers and rapists back to their country of origin. Yet the government leaps into action to bar an elderly, well-mannered intellectual with no criminal record and an impeccable reputation—because they fear what he might say.

Let that sink in.

This is not a question of national security. It is a question of political censorship.

The establishment cannot claim to uphold democracy and free speech while it blocks peaceful foreign thinkers from discussing policy with registered political parties. If our ideas are so wrong, so beyond the pale, then let them be debated in the open. The fact they cannot be tells you everything.

Liberal authoritarianism is now the prevailing ideology of the state and those abroad. It tolerates mass crime, rewards illegal behaviour, and suppresses those who speak out about it. Mr Camus’s case is not unique—it is merely the latest proof that free political thought is now treated as a threat.

Off the top of my head, the same “not conducive to the public good” justification has been used against at least two other political authors—both of whom have no criminal record and have consistently spoken out against extremism. Jared Taylor was detained at Heathrow Airport and subsequently deported in March 2018. Martin Sellner was first denied entry to the UK that same month; he was detained at Luton Airport alongside his wife, Brittany Pettibone, and later deported following an unnecessarily prolonged stay in a detention centre. In June 2019, the UK Home Office issued a permanent exclusion order against Sellner—without offering any credible justification.

So let’s be honest—anyone who talks about ‘Starmer’s Britain’ as if this country hasn’t been governed by the same liberal-authoritarian consensus for years is either uninformed, lazy, or flat-out disingenuous.

This incident marks the first time The Telegraph has mentioned the Homeland Party by name;2 a newspaper which is sometimes mockingly referred to as the “Torygraph” because of its liberal Tory readership, but which has lately gained a reputation for greater candour, accuracy, and a willingness to tackle controversial issues such as immigration and two-tier policing (at least for me, if not for others). We do appreciate the mention and fair description. Yet, disappointingly, they found time to contact Mr Camus’s book publisher for comment, but did not contact us. So, a registered political party, hosting a legitimate political conference, has had its guest speaker banned—but they don’t want input from those involved. We expect the same from other outlets that seek to contain genuine nationalist sentiment and therefore awareness of our party. This kind of behaviour is one of the reasons why people don’t have respect for journalists.

We understand Mr Camus will be on GB News tonight at 8pm with Matt Goodwin, a man well known for his use of containment tactics, so it will be interesting to see how that goes.

One curious detail worth noting is that The Telegraph chose to point out that Mr Camus is “openly gay”, despite the fact this has no bearing on the matter whatsoever. Why mention it? Likely because, to the liberal sensibility, being gay makes someone more authentic, more of a victim, and therefore more acceptable when expressing views normally deemed “far-right”. It is a bizarre, backhanded way of legitimising him to the intended readership—but it shouldn’t be necessary.

Mr Camus is not dangerous. He is not a criminal. He is a courageous thinker, author, and speaker. And this government would rather let foreign criminals roam the streets than let its own people hear what he has to say. If they could get away with it, I have no doubt they would do the same to us.

Shame on them.

This will not silence him—or us. In fact, such oppression hardens the hearts of freedom-loving men and women, makes us more ready for the political fight, and will ensure that his message is broadcast nonetheless.

Those who care about free speech, regardless of their political alignment, must be brave and speak out about this latest case. Silence, simply because the Homeland Party is involved, is cowardice. It shows you’re not prepared to win a political fight, and that you’d rather maintain your liberal credentials than defend what is right.
