One of Germany’s domestic intelligence agencies has now officially designated Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) as a “right-wing extremist” organisation. This is not merely a smear, it is an unprecedented and extraordinary act of political warfare against the most popular opposition party in the country, which consistently ranks first or second in the national polls.
To understand how absurd this move is, one must grasp the German state’s peculiar definition of “extremism.” Unlike other Western nations, where the term typically refers to violent or terroristic activity, Germany’s threshold is simply dissent from liberal dogma. In practice, being called an extremist in Germany means little more than holding views the regime disapproves of.
Even in the UK, under our own flawed and increasingly repressive regime, the 2024 government definition of extremism still recognises that seeking democratic change is not extremist. That definition, for all its problems, at least centres around the promotion of violence or hatred aimed at destroying rights or democracy. By that standard, the AfD would be considered a lawful, democratic party. Yet Germany, with all its claims to liberalism, cannot even tolerate that.
The German political order, constructed after its military defeat and foreign occupation, was deliberately designed to prevent genuine national renewal. The so-called Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfD) is not a neutral agency, it is a political weapon. Its mission is not to protect democracy, but to suppress any movement that seeks to change the regime peacefully and democratically through the ballot box. This is not to be confused with the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) who, in theory, have a legitimate job to do.
By designating the AfD as “extremist,” the BfD can now expand surveillance powers to monitor thousands of members and supporters. But the real motive is clear: the regime is terrified. It fears a patriotic awakening. It fears the people reclaiming sovereignty. It fears a future where the system of managed decline and moral blackmail is brought to an end.
Senior AfD representatives told us earlier this week that they expected such a move. Far from deterring them, it has only strengthened their resolve, and they will fight this all the way. They know, and we know, that every overstep by the state only increases support. Each hysterical accusation adds momentum to the movement for national restoration.
The press will now claim that this move brings the AfD closer to being banned. This is hysterical nonsense. Banning a political party in Germany is an entirely separate legal process, subject to constitutional court oversight, and even left-wing lawyers working for rival parties admit it would be unworkable. Not only would such an attempt likely fail, it would also backfire spectacularly, driving even more public support toward the AfD.
This is the lesson: the liberal authoritarians will label anyone they fear as “extremist,” “dangerous,” or “a threat to democracy.” But what they really mean is this: you cannot be bought, you cannot be silenced, and you dare to speak for your people.
Let the regime tremble, people are rising.
