People-smuggler jailed for manslaughter of 39 migrants

Marius Mihai Draghici is sentenced over the deaths of 39 Vietnamese migrants who were found dead in a lorry trailer in Essex, in October 2019. The court was told they suffered “unimaginable suffering and anguish” in their finals hours.

The 50-year-old Romanian has been described as the “right hand man” in the gang responsible for the deaths. He was returned to the UK by Romanian authorities after fleeing to his homeland shortly after the grim discover was made.

During sentencing, Mr Justice Garnham told the defendant he was an “essential cog in a conspiracy which made astonishing profits out of the exploitation of people desperate to get to the UK”. He said the conditions inside the trailer where the victims died were “unspeakable” with “people trapped inside the trailer with no ventilation and no way of getting out”. The judge then passed a sentence of 12 years and 8 months.

The Homeland Party would like to extent its deepest sympathies to the families of the victims of this terrible crime. We also acknowledge that two British men were also found guilty of lesser charges for their part in this crime. However, it was a Romanian gang; a foreign gang exploiting people for profit – sounds familiar!

Immigrants are leaving their mostly war-free countries to flee to the financial promised land, Europe, only to fall foul of other nations’ criminals along the way, whether it be Turkish gangs holding Afghans to ransom, sub-Saharan Africans being sold at slave markets in Libya or Vietnamese being suffocated to death in the back of a truck by Romanian gangs.

Because of our government’s ludicrous open borders policy, we tempt these people to come here and in doing so they run the gauntlet of all sorts of criminality at the hands of foreign gangs in foreign lands.

It seems in most cases they don’t leave their homelands because of persecution: the persecution happens on the trip to Europe and in many cases, by the people the victim has paid to help them.

This could easily be fixed; in the same way you wouldn’t reward a child who just ran across a duel carriageway, the Homeland Party would actively encourage people to not partake in these perilous journeys.
