A former SNP equalities officer has been jailed for six years for the sexual assault of six young adults. 24-year-old Cameron Downing was also convicted of assaulting two women.
Amongst his crimes were blackmailing a man he had sex with, claiming he would tell the man’s friends and family that he had been raped. Downing also repeatedly sent the victim threatening messages, demanded he provide his social media passwords and made threats to kill himself.
Judge Alison Stirling told Downing: “You have distorted views regarding intimate partner violence, and you have shown no remorse or insight into how your actions may have affected your victim.”
“Your offences are likely to have caused significant psychological and physical harm to all of your victims, and their psychological recovery from your actions could be prolonged.”
Downing was an active member of the SNP. According to his LinkedIn profile, he had stints as an equalities officer in the party’s branches in Edinburgh.

He was also heavily involved in Out For Independence, the SNP’s LGBTQ+ wing, serving as the media and communications officer and gender identity and expression officer.
In 2022, it emerged that Downing had tweeted that he wanted to “beat the f* out of some terfs and transphobes”. He also tweeted: “I f*ing hate terfs and transphobes with such a passion.”

Take a long, hard look because this is the sort of zealot who would see his political enemies jailed without trial or for no good reason and enjoy the pain and torment.
If we lose, people like Cameron Downing will be the camp guard
And he’ll love it.
